What are catalogues and what are they used for?
A catalogue is a detailed guide to a list of products which customers can use to order goods. Usually each product will have a reference number or individual name so that it can be easily referenced on an order form or when discussing the order over the phone
.
How are they different to brochures?
A catalogue will contain much more detail about individual products than a brochure. The imagery is usually product specific and not broad or aspirational. Catalogues tend to follow a much stricter and more consistent design than brochures.
The purpose of a catalogue is for customers to find products simply and quickly, so the design has to concentrate on making the information easy to find, read and understand. The design should never overpower the information. While brochures tend to be printed on heavy paper stocks, catalogues can be printed on much lighter paper stock.
What makes an effective catalogue?
An effective catalogue is one that is laid out with ease of reference in mind. Catalogues can be arranged in many different ways; alphabetically, numerically, by product, colour, shape, size etc. The key is to make it instantly obvious how these products have been arranged and where your customers need to go, to find them.
Good quality design and print is essential for catalogues as is the use of well cropped and well positioned product photographs. Well written copy with compelling headlines that highlight the products benefits is also essential as this will help to galvanise the reader into making that buying decision.
The catalogue design process
The catalogue design process starts with a design brief. Your dedicated account handler will work with you to develop a brief and understand your business and target market. This is done over the phone or by email and will enable us to advise on what form your catalogue should take, to produce the best results.
We will design the front cover and an initial page layout over 3 drafts. With your approval, we then do a layout of the entire catalogue over another 3 drafts. Throughout this process, the dedicated account handler assigned to your project will be available to offer advice, answer any queries and ensure that you get the design, format and finish that you desire.
The right design and layout of your catalogue is all important.
From simple 8 page booklets to much larger catalogue designs, we have created hugely successful material across the full spectrum of business and industries. Experience has shown us that there is format, size and paper choice, perfect for every business so please contact us for advice on creating the right catalogue for you
