Business Flyer Design: How to Lower Your Flyer Design and Printing Costs

Using flyers to promote your business or event is a very cost effective form of advertising, but as with most forms of promotion, it costs money. So, how do you keep your business flyer design costs down to maximise your return on investment?

Tip 1: Employ a good graphic designer

Although it may be tempting to do it yourself, when designing any business marketing materials, it pays to use a professional. A good graphic designer will ensure that you engage your audience effectively, send out the right messages about the quality of your products/services and achieve a consistent image throughout your company literature which will collectively make them more effective. This will lead to a higher response rate from your flyer, and therefore a better return on investment.

Most graphic designers work on an hourly rate, so it is important to find out what this is before any design works starts. Also find out how long the business flyer is likely to take to produce and if there could be any additional charges – such as for amendments or print prepping. Alternatively, some graphic designers offer a ‘fixed’ price which will allow you to keep costs under control; just be sure to know what is included in this fixed fee.

Tip 2: Choose cost-effective stock photographs or images

If your business flyer design requires images then using stock photographs from a photo library can be cheaper than commissioning a photographer. Your designer should be able to include low-res versions of the stock image in the design, but find out how much each stock image costs before they purchase the high-res version for you. A standard stock image for a flyer should cost £5 - £10. If they are more expensive you may be able to find something less expensive yourself by searching popular stock photo or image libraries on the Internet.

Tip 3: Choose the right product

Flyers vary in both size and thickness so think carefully before making a selection. An A4 flyer will not only be more expensive to design and print, but will also be more expensive to send. Unusual shapes will also cost more than something more standard, so it may be better to rely on the design to create the impact rather than a novelty shape. Make sure you understand the thickness of paper or card your flyer will be printed on, especially when comparing quotes. Always ask your designer for the most cost-effective paper option, as this may not always be the thinnest.

Tip 4: Choose the size of your print run

Generally speaking, the more copies you get printed at one time, the cheaper it works out on a cost per copy basis. As most of the cost is in ‘setting up’ the print, sometimes there can be very little difference between the business flyer design cost of a 2000 print run and that of a 5000 print run.

When you ask for a quote always get quotes for at least two different quantities. That way you can compare the prices and decide whether it might actually be better to get more copies printed initially. Bear in mind that it is far better to pay a little extra initially, than to have to get more flyers printed later. A separate print run at a later date will work out considerably more expensive.

Tip 5: Be organised – and plan your printing time in advance

Many people leave the creation of their flyer too late. This means that they often have to pay extra costs for Express 48 hour print and for Express courier delivery. By planning your promotion in advance and finding out the most cost-effective printing time from your designer, you can make sure that unforeseen costs are kept to a minimum
