Marketing your business with leaflets
Leaflets or flyers offer a cost effective way to promote a business and offer a direct way to deliver information about a company’s products or services direct to the customer.
The key to a successful promotion with leaflets is to generate a high response rate. This will be influenced by the quality and design, size, type, messages and method of distribution. So it is important that all of these factors work effectively together to achieve the maximum return on investment.
A professional leaflet designer will ensure your leaflets hit all of your marketing aims. They will optimise the graphics, headings and text, to attract the recipient’s attention, create interest and trust in your products or services and encourage him or her to take action. This action may be to respond immediately, store the leaflet for future use or pass it to a friend.
Leaflet types
There are a number of different standard leaflet types available from Add Design. Our most popular choices include the standard DL leaflet, 2-fold A4 leaflet and the Zig-Zag leaflet. Choosing the right format for your promotional campaign will depend on the quantity of information it needs to include, the market it is tagetting and the method of distribution.
The DL leaflet is a 99mm X 210mm (1/3 A4 sheet) and can be single or double-sided. The size of this leaflet is perfect for slotting into stands at an exhibition centre or tourist information centre. It also fits into a standard business size envelope, which makes this a cost effective option for posting out in response to enquiries. Space on this leaflet is limited so it is most suitable for building awareness about an individual product/service or communicating one simple and clear promotional message.
The 2-fold A4 leaflet folds down to 99mm X 210mm (1/3 A4 sheet). It provides six sides in total, which can be filled with detailed content about products or services. This is ideal for smaller businesses who cannot afford a larger brochure, or larger companies looking for a cost-effective option of distributing information to a large number of consumers. This format is not commonly used for business-to-business marketing.
The Zig-zag leaflet is also a folded leaflet, providing four clearly defined content sections. This ingenious format is perfect for businesses who wish to profile the different products or services they offer into easy-to-read sections. The unusual shape is also guaranteed to get your business noticed.
Information to include on leaflets
Leaflets work best when the information is clear and to the point. They need to incorporate interesting headings that encourage the reader to open them, simple messages that communicate benefits and the ‘call to action’ which encourages new customers to take positive action by calling the company, visiting the website or purchasing the product. You only have a few seconds to get your message across, so it is important to make your leaflet as easy to understand as possible.

Leaflet distribution
Once designed, leaflets can be distributed to potential clients and enquirers through a variety of methods. Each of these methods provides a different way of targeting potential customers. They can be posted through letterboxes – either individually or distributed by a leaflet delivery company, they can be placed in magazines or newspapers, included in promotional packs at shows and exhibitions, handed out on the street or sent directly to a mailing list in the post. With permission, they can also be displayed in prominent public places such as local shops, doctors surgeries, takeaways, post offices or pubs.
Measuring Results
Knowing what messages your target customers respond to will help you refine future leaflet marketing campaigns. Adding unique offers or promotional codes to each run of leaflets you produce offers a way of measuring the response rate.
It is also possible to use a unique telephone number, e-mail address or website address on your leaflets. This will enable you to track how effective your leaflet marketing results are compared to other forms of marketing/advertising.
