How mobiles and tablets have changed logo design

If home is where the heart is, then our mobiles are increasingly becoming the beating heart of our homelands. Smartphone use has increased from 21% in 2010 to more than 63% today. We are increasingly viewing our world through a window the size of a postcard or smaller and with the increase in popularity of apps, it’s hardly surprising that the slick, yet simplistic icons that dominate the app stores and our digital devices, have begun to move into mainstream logo design.

Flat Graphics Long Shadows

With the redesign of  the Windows, iOS and Android platforms in recent years, flat graphics and long shadows have become one of the biggest trends, shunning all of the 3D or pseudo-realistic design techniques in favour of a more simplified, classically digital aesthetic. While Microsoft didn’t start the flat design revolution, they made a massive impact by virtue of the development and marketing of Windows 8. Now that Apple have redesigned the look and feel of it’s mobile interface, iOS7, taking cues from Microsoft and Google, you know that it’s probably safe to say that the flat design trend will be around for quite some time. Everyone from eBay to Spotify have re-branded recently and have reappeared having slimmed right down. In one word, simplification.

Dimension and detail have been removed so that they can be read properly on mobiles and tablets. Designers are looking to introduce minimalism, clarity and bold colours to their designs. Symbols are being adopted by consumers at an extraordinary pace, and many of these from digital devices or associations with that industry. Clouds, Wi-Fi waves, loading wheels and a rush of icons from our mobile devices are providing the analogies for the next generation of logos.
